Meet The Alliance for Florida’s National Parks: Who We Are, What We Do, and Why It Matters

Since 2002, our organization has supported Big Cypress National Preserve and Biscayne, Dry Tortugas, and Everglades National Parks. In 2020, we embraced a broader vision, emerging as The Alliance for Florida’s National Parks. We moved beyond traditional grantmaking to championing private philanthropy that fuels education, exploration, and conservation.

Florida is home to some of the most breathtaking and ecologically important national parks in the United States: Big Cypress National Preserve and Biscayne, Dry Tortugas, and Everglades National Parks. To the extent that government funding for programs at these parks is at risk of decline, so is the health and existence of our national parks in Florida.

The Alliance for Florida’s National Parks plays a vital role in sustaining essential and significant programs that federal funding simply does not cover. These impactful programs – ranging from student field experiences, to volunteer programs, and habitat restoration – depend on private philanthropy.

As the official philanthropic partner of Florida’s national parks, we are at the heart of providing critical funding to support essential education, exploration, and conservation programs. We are a beacon of hope for their future.

Who We Are:

Founded in 2002 as the South Florida National Parks Trust, our organization began as a grant-making entity benefiting Big Cypress National Preserve, and Biscayne, Dry Tortugas, and Everglades National Parks. Over nearly two decades, the Trust managed and distributed millions of dollars in grants to the parks.

In 2020, to reflect our expanded scope of fundraising and collaboration, we rebranded as The Alliance for Florida’s National Parks. This change marked a significant shift as we transitioned to active fundraising, leveraging private funds from generous donors who share our devotion to education, exploration, and conservation.

What We Do:

As careful stewards of the funds we raise, we ensure every dollar advances impactful mission-oriented outcomes in three areas:

  • Education – We support programs that bring over 70,000 students and teachers into the parks each year, offering hands-on science learning that aligns with Florida state standards for education. These multi-touchpoint experiences don’t just teach – they spark curiosity and often inspire future conservation careers. We want others to know, love, and support Florida’s National Parks like we do.
  • Exploration – From guided hikes to community events like Two Nights Under the Stars, we create opportunities for people of all ages to connect with the parks in meaningful, memorable ways. Proceeds from our public events offer a unique opportunity to support our mission while enjoying the beauty of the parks firsthand.
  • Conservation – We help fund habitat restoration, wildlife protection, and critical research projects, ensuring the parks remain fascinating places to learn and explore.

Why It Matters:

Federal funding alone cannot cover the costs of essential programs in South Florida’s national parks. That’s where philanthropy — and people like you — come in. Every donation, sponsorship, or volunteer hour helps us protect wetlands, coral reefs, and so much more.

Thanks to our generous supporters, we ensure that critical park programs continue to thrive, educating teachers and students, connecting communities to nature, and preserving the health and beauty of Florida’s national parks for generations to come.
