It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a member of our NPS family, Louis “Phil” Navarro, hydro- technician with the South Florida Natural Resources Center at Everglades National Park, on March 7, 2022. Phil served as a hydro-technician in the South Florida Natural Resources Center and was performing work duties on an airboat in the park. He is believed to have suffered a medical episode, resulting in a line of duty death.
Phil had served as a hydro-technician at EVER since 2000. He began his NPS career working on a variety of hydrologic projects as a contractor. Upon transitioning to full-time federal employee, Phil maintained monitoring stations, which brought him to the most remote corners of this park. He was known for his positive attitude, infectious smile and passion for the resource.
As a longtime member of the Everglades National Park team and broader NPS family, Phil will be greatly missed. His passing reminds us to hug our loved ones tighter as we head out the door to work each day, to be grateful for our teammates at the day’s end and to remember that each day is a gift. May we honor Phil’s legacy in doing so.
The donations given here will be passed along directly to Phil’s family to help cover funeral costs and other related adjustments that come along with the passing of a loved one.
