Members Outing: Big Cypress Orchid Walk

Join us for an easy hike in Big Cypress to look for orchids, one of two Experience Your Backyard programs for SFNPT members in March. We'll meet at the Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center at 9:00 AM and then carpool to the trailhead. Water may be ankle-deep in places along the trail. Explore the night sky with a ranger during the last Star Party of the season at Big Cypress National Preserve, an official International Dark Sky Place and one of the best places in South Florida to see the Milky Way. The program is free and open to the public. Presentations will include constellation tours and telescope viewing (weather permitting) of astronomical objects including stars, star clusters, planets, nebulae, and galaxies. Tamiami Trail Triathlon

The final ranger-led Tamiami Trail Triathlon of the season takes place Sunday April 2 starting at the Gulf Coast Visitor Center at Everglades National Park with a round-trip paddle to Sandfly Island. The paddle trip is followed by a hike in Big Cypress and a bike ride in Shark Valley. Folks who finish all three legs receive a t-shirt, compliments of the South Florida National Parks Trust. Volunteer with the SFNPT to plant cypress trees in Big Cypress National Preserve. On Saturday, August 19th we will plant 150 cypress trees along Turner River Road as part of restoration work in the park. Trees will be planted at sites newly cleared of invasive plant species and at several new culvert locations in the park. Planting is hard work, but it is a rewarding experience that helps improve park habitats and benefits native plants and wildlife – we can’t do…
